LORY BEDIKIAN: book presentation

LORY BEDIKIAN
presenting her new book of poetry
THE BOOK OF LAMENTING
Winner of the 2010 Philip Levine Prize for Poetry.

Presentation by SHAHE MANKERIAN
“After All, Who Remembers the Armenian-American Poets?”

Book Introduction by ARAM KOUYOUMDJIAN

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2011, - 7:30PM
GLENDALE CENTRAL LIBRARY AUDITORIUM - 222 E. Harvard St., Glendale, CA

Admission is free.  Reception to follow.  Validated parking available across the street at the Marketplace parking structure.

Lory Bedikian's The Book of Lamenting begins within a foundation of lyricism -- "On the back of every tongue in my family/ there is a dove that lives and dies." Bedikian recognizes the genuine world of the imagination, one we inhabit but often lose sight of -- a world with "floating hieroglyphics of flame," where sometimes one must "[e]mpty your pockets/ of the noise you carry" and "count olives/ in place of coins." Wisdom rises up through the losses in Bedikian's poetry. One poem begins -- "The year 1997 rose like a spiral staircase/ into a ceiling of darkness." The Book of Lamenting ascends into the darkness in a similar way -- bringing us gifts of light and memory, so that the small doves at the back of every tongue might sing. -- 2010 Levine Prize judge Brian Turner

Suffering
by Moushegh Ishkhan (1913-1990)

Perhaps all this around us is a dream,
Our human eyes the screen of this delusion,
The occurrences of life a motion picture show,
Perhaps all this around us is a dream.

Only the misery of our life is real,
Mysterious and profound our suffering,
A bubbling broth of tears, food for the soul,
Only the misery of our life is real.

Joy is but a momentary memory of dreams,
Laughter and high spirits the echoes of some fleeting hope,
The smiles of men just shimmerings of moonlight,
Joy is but a momentary memory of dreams.

Alive our tears alone really exist,
The essence of this world, distilled eternal,
The shining spirits of intoxication,
Alive our tears alone really exist.

This translation by William Kennedy with Vahé Oshagan appeared in RAFT, volume 5, 1991.

I wish in return I could
save the lives of those

Where is morality?

VIENT DE PARAÎTRE :

Krikor Beledian

Seuils

Your Father has Vanished, read by Lola Koundakjian.

Your father has vanished
Yet no one asks
"How did you make it, son?

The bees
Took your hope
Yet you learned to hope

The bees
Collected the songs
Yet you learned to love

The bees
Gathered the pain
Yet you learned to live

Your father has vanished
Yet no ones asks
"How did you became a father, my son?"

Translation by Lola Koundakjian

Your Father Is Gone

And no one is asking
“How did you make it, son?”
The bees
Gathered hope --
You learned to believe.
The bees
Gathered song --
You learned to love.
The bees
Gathered pain --
You learned to live.
Your father is gone --
And no one is asking
“How did you become a father,
My son?”

En el mundo no he de penar...

En el mundo no he de penar, pues eres vida para mí;

Dulce es tu lengua, azúcar son tus labios, perlas y diamantes tus dientes;

Sangre has tornado mi llanto, he perdido la cabeza por ti.
Nueva viña eres en nuevo jardín, cercada con setos;

Aromático cardamomo, canela, clavel, rosa, tomillo eres;

Mark Gavoor: Joni Lansing

i could write every poem
listening to joni mitchell songs
'a case of you' playing
like a winter long ago
up there in the east of lansing
trying not to fall in love
and trying to be brilliant
failing at both

kicking back...
thinking and writing
sipping a cup of mesmer
icing on the cake of this day
wondering what canada
i might have lived in musing
‘bout trying to live at living

you make everything better
and angstful at the same time
you make poems just ooze
out of my natural self

what can i say but...
thanks

Lara Maldjian: For My Family

from "For My Family", a zine about being queer and Armenian

I do not see my language in letters.
Though it was my first,
my first thought
my first word
my first laugh
I never learned to write it down
it’s a love story that has never
corresponded with paper
until now.
When I speak,
the words come out letterless
but never shapeless.
I see
The curve of a hip
My mother’s hairclip
My sister’s lipstick
My grandmother’s hands
My father’s bright smile.

I was taught
only
to read
in
family.
***
I imagine brown limbs,
my legs wrapped around a pair of thighs that
understand my own,
know the history of my hips, speak the
language of my lips.
I imagine brown eyes,
With matted lashes,
Mouth thick, voice thick, hair thick,
Everywhere,
Making art on pillow cases,
Building nests,
Entangling.
I imagine our hearts tugging,
Our voices sharing space,
Making the same sounds
our fingers spelling the same words.
Imagine a hand,
large and strong at the base of my neck,
keeping me there,
and for one minute
I do not struggle.

Bruitage & The Concession Stand

A film and poetry event
GLENDALE, CA The filmmaker of Bruitage, Hrayr Anmahouni and the poet, Arpine Konyalian Grenier to present Bruitage & The Concession Stand at the Glendale Public Library Auditorium, 222 East Harvard Street, on Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 4pm.

Both film-maker and poet navigate the uncharted as they create an evocative grammar of soul, self, and society – a straying into the unknown of the known, a wisdom that comes from cultural memory and its subtractions.

The program is organized by Abril bookstore and is sponsored by The Glendale Public library.

Tatul Sonentz: Dream Boat

In the blue shadow
of the pyramids at Giza,
a shallow, open grave in the guise
of museum displays a solar boat,
a ship of royal hopes, dreams
of a cruise to immortality...

A dream boat of the soul, sailing
by faith in stars, soaring with the sun,
now becalmed in a sea of sand and silence,
sails neatly tied to a mast laid to rest
after a journey through millennia
to a place beyond distance,
beyond eternal quest,
beyond history...

I do know that place,
I played as a child in the sands
of its time, drank the water
of its timeless river, slept
in its sun and -- in a host
birthplace -- I dreamt
of my own space.

Armenian World

What a curious world,
what wondrous earth.
Digging in your garden
you find letters in the dirt.

What glorious orchards,
what strange trees
where gilded apricots glow
in the golden breeze.

Look in the vineyards
where ripe grapes are strung
with hyrens and quatrains
raining where they’re hung.

What strange gardens, Lord,
in this Mashtot’s land
where words for poems grow
out of dry sand.

Farewell to Arshile Gorky
How great you were your arms wide open
Your voice was an eagle’s nest
When you sang uncloaked the old Russian chants
You had acquired your share of the chaste line
With no knowledge of its purpose
And the heavy net that you pulled in alone
From the depths of time
In long armfuls the fusion of frequent enticements and keepsakes
You should have been seen on the theme
You and your splendid blind twin
The realist and the non-realist
You were the one who made this dry bread crack
I see you once more with your fabled staff
Among the stars of blossoming trees
I tear myself free of your destiny
How they were bent on destruction my old Arshile
Oh how he loves the fire where they burn his house
Where he safeguards the twenty years’ witness of selfless exertion
Ruptured from all that can be seen today
You entice me–let us curse it said the ash to the ember
And as it was not enough
They chose to set you by your own red
In the space of the sun of your very self
Then as you kept coming back
They stalked you to break your neck
At that most tender point that you loved
To make shine your fairy-maiden
To fathom the distance by yourselves.
Who knows if they had other tricks in their bag
There was no more left for you to do
Than to give yourself Gérard de Nerval’s tragic demise
How high you are
In the air–
Less than what you leave us
Less than your name
Pinned on the vast storms of my heart

Veronica Pamoukaghlian: To a Knight in rusty armour

I have
good things for you
if you will grab them

but I won´t give
I´m done with giving

You will have to reach out
come down
and snatch me

My stem is frail,
and broke
as you may be
you have the power

this is a flower
only your hand
can rip
out of the ground

like knights
and swords
frozen in stone

only the prize
is sweeter

Esther Heboyan: EXPOSURE

like
a cauliflower
round white and green
atop the kitchen counter
mosaic clean
my mood
diversely
into brown spots
rots
never to recover
its cauliflower sheen
