Peter Balakian: August Diary

Click here to hear the audio clip August Diary read by Lola Koundakjian.

8/1

From here groomed fields and clumps of trees,
a silo of corrugated tin and a white barn blur.

Unseasonable cool days,
high, blue, a few clouds like ripped pillows
as if this were a lip of the North Sea

and I could look out and imagine Denmark.
But I’m in my office three floors up.

8/3

In Armenian there’s a word—garod—rhymes with “maud.”

The beautiful ones are not faithful
and the faithful ones are not beautiful—

a student said that about some Pavese translations,
here in my office.

Should I tell you what garod means?

8/5

What’s happening in Spitak and Sarajevo and the West Bank
is splayed like the cortex of a silicon chip in the fuzzy air.

Maria, the physician from Armenia, was 25 & had one plastic arm
and one real arm. I met her in East Hampton on the deck of a house on the dunes.
After the earthquake she had no husband,
no parents, and only one child.

“I’m in a good mood today,” she said, “let’s talk about
something else.” I poured her an Amstel Light.

8/10

The coolness intrudes—
month of wind-sprints and retching for the coach.
It comes back like nerve ends after surgery.

Along a country road cicadas rattling.
Chicory and sweet pea intruding on the ripe barley.

I picked up some seed packs from a junk shop on Rt. 20,
a tomato blazed in red ink/ 1926, Fredonia, N.Y.

8/11

What’s between us? The red ink of the tomato?

How does an image stay? Or is it always aftermath?
The way deep black reflected the most light in Talbot’s first calotypes.

But garod: tongue of a snake,
meaning exile, longing for home.

Thomas Wedgwood got images by getting sunlight
to pass through things onto paper brushed with silver nitrate:

wings of a dragonfly, the spine of an oak leaf—
fugitive photograms. But he couldn’t stop the sun
until it turned the paper black.

Stop the light before it goes too far?

Or is desire what garod means?
Longing for a native place.

8/17

Maria said she was learning how to connect nerve endings
in the hand so hands and arms would work again.
There were so many in Armenia without working hands and arms.

At the end of each dendrite is a blurred line
like the horizon I’m squinting.

Image of the other:
light-arrested; not the image of ourselves.

8/21

After digging scallions one day Dickinson defined freedom:
Captivity’s consciousness, so’s liberty.

Maybe garod is about the longing for the native place
between two selves.

8/22

I love the brute force of silence in Roger Fenton’s
Sebastopol from Cathcart’s Hill, 1855. The Crimean inner war.

The artlessness of silver is like my tongue in your wet space,
or like the news photos that bring us the pressure of disaster.

Beloved topography,
garod then must mean yearning.

Is that how we loved under the rattling Nippon porcelain,
in the light calotyped by the fire escape?

8/25

garod: the grain chute that spills
into a dark barn which is endless,

like the self when it’s out of reach.

Are we so lonely that a constellation
could blacken and fill up that same barn,

and that be me or you?

But still we’re piss and oats and stock in there.
We’re like civet, who wouldn’t love it.

8/31

the new glass-plate pictures:
transparent as air, Szarkowski wrote

like windows

the fragmentary, scruffy, particularity
of real living behind them—

William Michaelian: August Days

August days
are a recipe for longing:
they bring scented dust
and dew, the first
nocturnal kiss
upon veined leaves
that are beginning
to resemble
my mother’s hands.

Though much
of summer lies ahead,
autumn is creeping in,
feigning patience
with vineyard rows,
gently coaxing
the fruiting bough,

Soft the yellows,
purples, reds,
soft the folds upon
her unmade bed,
soft the light
on her faded gown,

My mother holds
them in her hands,
until they wither
and die upon
the ground,

Then wonders
where August days
have gone, and forgets
the ones she’s found.

Abraham Terian: At Dusk Near Vayk (Armenia)

The valley is calmly receding into the shadows,
into the warm glow of respect left by the sun.
The scene around me is changing in slow motion
and the boulders are beginning to make sense.

In my ancestral land, in so many ways
I feel the grip the past holds on the present.
That moment near Vayk is still receding
into the past, the valley of eternal boulders.

RONALD L. DZERIGIAN: On a Tuesday

On a Tuesday
I had my feet
in the river.

My jeans were rolled
just above the ankles
where the hair thickened.

All I could see
when I looked down
was the sky
below me.

Jim Erkiletian: for love of america PEACE canada

Can we send you a CD of songpoems of peace?
Suitable for air play, but hard to get on radio because...

Peace doesn't sell cars, or cops or
cosmetics or even hockey or
football regardless the
winners maybe started on the
fields of competitive play
as did the loosers
on both sides...
And the dead don't ask
embareassing questions...

Jim Erkiletian: Between what is

It is not you and is not me
that tells us what will be
that gives us reason to go on
against the swollen river's strong
unhappy pressure bearing down
to death beneath the sea.
You're over there, I'm over here
across a gulf of circumstance
the twisted dance invites us here
but not to touch or see or hear
beyond the circumscribed unchance.
But if you get my meaning clear
it's not what happens there or here
that gives our tortured lonely lives
the meaning that like razor knives
allows a sense to sense its way
to something more that kills the fear.
You are you and I am me
of that there is no doubt or loss
but what scene's seen of bright chaos
and meaning's mean meanderings
is not what's there or here
but what's there in between.

Jim Erkiletian

PAUL ALOOJIAN: Meeting Melanie in the Pizza Parlor

I nurse my beer, and you look away,
Duchess of button mushrooms,
thin blonde princess of pepperoni,
deserted by your chauffeur and governess.
You stare at the black and white picture
of the old museum on the baby grand –
a poster of Ancient Antarctica on the summer windows.
Gardens of begonias and sand,
bowler hats and umbrellas on the foggy pier,
you sip your soda, dancing around the juke box,
child of stockings and one day colds,
empress of mozzarella
and ageless melodies,
ballerina of the hidden harbor.

Abraham Terian: The Steel Drum

He stood like a high priest, his
ebony hands against the steel;
he held the pair of sticks
like ceremonial crosses. With
gentle beats he blessed the bowl,
from east to west, the south
and the north of the rim,
every inch of the bottom. With
celestial sounds he rounded
the growing crowd, enchanted,
from one street corner to the next.
As celebrant he chimed
this inverted bell, censed
around this upended dome
of a cathedral in miniature
where angels descend, enamored,
to be baptized by human hands
in such a stainless bowl.

Y. Stephan Bulbulian: The Art of Pruning Vines

for Berge, who taught me this art

Under the morning ceiling of the tule fog,
Walk proudly in the vineyard of your father.
Know every grapevine personally;
From the very planting, watch them grow.

Understand the pecularities of each,
Which one of the rows grows vigorously,
What vines will produce a hearty crop.
Know the places where the soil is sandy.

Wear two hats as part of your uniform
In the vineyard. At the start, put one hat
On the end-post to mark the place you begin.
Pull down the other hat over your ears.

Take off your gloves early in the day,
To dry from the frost on the limbs and canes,
Hang one of your coats on the vineyard wire
When the sun comes out later in the day.

Gangling vine canes with slender stems
Seem more numerous than life’s misfortunes.
Keep your pruning shear sharply honed.
At harvest, every grape has a thousand wasps.

Near the road, at the head of the vineyard row,
Square off, standing in front of ancient vines.
Slash the overgrown brush wrapped on the wire.
Remove the old growth that yielded the crop.

Take the handle of the shear under your arm;
Hold the other end in the palm of your right hand.
Draw the limb to you, cut it, toss it to the ground,
In the mud, the dirt, the weeds that survive the cold.

Follow the vineyard row & the daydreams
That occur in the field while working, for here
Are the thoughts that lead to the art of pruning.
Wrap branches on the wire. Don’t let them hit you.

Hard work means long life & short days.
Make the sacrifice to cut the little spindly vines;
Slice the weak ends back to 2-1/2 feet long.
There is little choice: the shear is wealth.

As the day denies the promise of night,
“…. a hundred vines to cut before dark.”
Labor in vain is lost for good. Looking ahead
To the next crop is the art of pruning vines.

Nora Nadjarian: I Studied the Silence of the Stars…

I studied the silence of the stars,
the black, icy skies, the skeletons of trees.
For centuries my mind was at work,
sharp yet bitter, and now old and strange.

When I speak, I still lisp like a boy,
and on certain untroubled, lucky nights,
when I dream of the unicorn, its musky smell
and wild hooves —

I imagine that tomorrow will take my hand,
and teach me to write one more book
which will astonish the world.

Click to hear the audio clip The Nightwatch read by Lola Koundakjian

JAMES BALOIAN: The Armenian

for Garabed Baloian

The last number is the first
And the curve in the straight line
Is only a river that runs from a desert

I would name that river
But by nature it leads to the sea
I would enter from north
And climb the backside
Of Mesrob’s mountain
To watch the city of Palu operate

Multicolored scarves and vegetable markets
Awaken indestructibly among stars
To measure the space between breaths
Streets dance with the music of work
Out of the mouth of the mountain
Stone arches crown the Euphrates
It is the beginning of time

I have not yet been born

Abraham Terian: Nightfall on Ararat

Last night I watched the horizon melt;
there were cracks in the sky.
I heard the flare of colors,
the end of “Sabre Dance”.

Today I feel the embers of yesterday.
Just now faded the last of notes
from the melted strings
on the ashes of violins.

Vahé Godel: Voix blanche

(obscursis ta demeure murmure une voix blanche) rompus
tous les circuits brisées toutes les lampes
– globes néons
lustres spots –
(t’éblouisse le noir !)
ne subsiste
qu’une allumette
une seule bougie blanche blanche
comme les parois
d’une cellule
individuelle
d’un centre spatial
d’une salle de réveil
d’un oratoire ou
d’une morgue
blanche comme
les neiges éternelles
de l’innommable
comme l’uniforme
des Gardiennes
du Silence
oui
plus blanche encore
qu’une nuit blanche
( souffle la bougie
ferme les yeux
contemple l’horizon

Click here for the audio clip The Lamp read by Lola Koundakjian.

Abraham Terian: Playing Dvorak

I watched Dvorak go round and round
as the needle moved the hypnotic grooves;
I read his name more than a hundred times,
till he was reborn a whirling Dervish.

On s’épuise à vouloir lui échapper

Abraham Terian: South of Monterey

Click hear for the audio clip South of Monterey read by Lola Koundakjian.

With so many things common on my mind –
interlaced layers of memory and feeling –
I’m waiting like a catcher with a mitt
for the sinking sun.

In my mind I’m adding to the poetry of my time,
talking to myself with familiar, elegiac feeling;
my footprints in the sand a readable text
on longing and loss.

The sun is just about to kiss the yearning ocean,
to adjourn once more with a lingering embrace.
I’m watching jealously as seagulls cheer
the eternal lovers.

James Baloian: Fresno Indian

I lived underground during the 1950’s
in the wake of my father’s habitual
and unknown rage to weave himself
through the stagnant air creating an alphabet
of icicles from the eave of his wooden
tongue—
He struggled in web of private conversations
and kept us silent with threats and abandonment—
orphaned to invisibility where dreams
survive
on the urgency of boredom.
…..And being 10 years old I would slip
like a lizard into a pool of shadows
finding a pathway from his dark window
down the yellowy fragrance of a lemon
tree
studded with thorns
and into my grandmother’s backyard garden
where imaginary winds dusted with sunlight
lingered beneath a veil of star-faced jasmine—
I listened to the growing of things
whose boundaries opened into wilderness
where the city stopped and farmland
spilled like ink over the landscape for
miles
Screen doors swung easy like clockwork
in a trusting wind which seemed strange
on a planet where nightly
blue-collared fathers knee-deep in backyards
dug bomb-shelters after work and on
weekends
with nightmare delusions of reddened skies
swallowed by mushroomed clouds
Families struggled sinking
silently into a lifetime of expectations
Their other selves left to keep appearances
ran for discovery from this grand illusion
of green lawns and a perfect death
No one really slept
buried up to their necks in schedules and
telephones
watching children disappear into a blank
margin
of no return…….across an outfield of
timeless summers
forged with long hours and hunched
backs
looking for work and the American grail
even on Sundays before dinners in coppertinted
rooms
tanned by the oily seasoning of garlic and
lamb
where windows hung like portraits of
hunger
from far away lands
At 13 I heard schoolmates point in slow
motion
at the Armenian in me and the invisibility
that was visible
in a Kingdom where dreams survive on
long tables of diplomacy
and reality speaks from the splintered lips
of baseball bats
threatening the heroes of this poem
to bleach their dark skins white
They called Armenians, “Fresno Indians,”
with our hollowed eyes and eagle-beaked
noses
but my grandmother said
they called us, “Starving black Armenians….
first.”
Those whose promises
promised nothing
in a land that genocided its natives
with no reservation
We were no strangers to genocide
Fugitives of dust
We blurred into borders and brown-faced
hills
to wait like grass for winter’s first rain
We survived the delirium of previous lives
as if some god had forgotten us
and ordered our children to bleed
and our earth bitten and bled
by tooth and nail……
We breathed life without a cry
our skins emerging from an undergrowth
of syllables
unfold from the simple grace all miracles
grow
…….The ranches I knew as a boy have
turned to salt
and winter like my grandmother’s unbunned
white hair
haunts the ruins of broken mirrors
in empty stations looking for the river
back to eden
praying a melody on the green side of
childhood….
She assumes what is necessary for the moment
to shape what remains after death
And who once having lived
a life on the edge
sits at an empty table
Her hands drink a headful of bad dreams
and everything that she was before
commands the wind
to sing in Armenian

Esther Heboyan: THE MERRY MEN OF PLUM COUNTRY

Will you, my Pretty,
Will you, ma Chérie,
Marry the merry men of Plum Country?

I’d rather not, Mama,
Be traded
Nor degraded
For the sake of destiny.

Will you, my Pretty,
Will you, ma Chérie,
Marry the merry men of Plum Country?

I’d rather not, Mama,
Be hurdled
Nor curdled
In the manic shade of a tree.

Will you, my Pretty,
Will you, ma Chérie,
Marry the merry men of Plum Country?

I’d rather not, Mama,
Be kicked in the loins
Nor plucked to the bones
Under a moon so skimpy.

So – have you, my Pretty,
Have you, ma Chérie,
Trod the road to Plum Country?

Mama, don’t you know
Glazed shadows
Return no glee?
And the foul trick on me.

Mama, once upon a tomorrow
If no gentleness grows
Inside plexiglass humanity
Do not pledge away my Lily.

Nora Nadjarian: When you return to Ashtarak

stand on the bridge
and listen to the silence of our ancestors
in the marrow of your bones

sing sing and wake up the stones
the souls of the dead the river the skies
sing to those red and orange birds in our language
sing those bittersweet words and proud refrains
to show them you remember who you are

stand on the bridge
and listen to the silence of our ancestors
in the marrow of your bones

remember who you are
as you sing to the river Kasakh
when you return

RONALD L DZERIGIAN: July

In the summer
Fresno is an open flame
beneath our feet,

makes our mouths
sensitive to stolen loquats
We see canals explode

with cliff swallows,
all curves and arrows.
The dust in our rooms

settles at family reunions
on the pond
with a few leaves

floating clouds above
the tangerine Koi
in the backyard.

Abraham Terian: Dear Vincent

Yesterday I picked a few magnolias in half bloom
and thought of you, your countenance,
and then some. Your art is always on my mind,
you know. I’m enclosing a pressed blossom –
a little white and pink for your yellow and blue.

Click hear for the audio clip While passing read by Yeraz Markarian.

Y. Stephan Bulbulian: Ararat Cemetery

At the Ararat Cemetery
in Fresno, California,
the Armenian gravestones
have small oval pictures
of their namesakes,
in the area behind
the Pharaoh’s mausoleum.
It could be a village,
this section,
where the faces in the
pictures have profound
straight noses,
deep-set eyes,
every face sad
for its death, glad
to be buried next to
cousin Mesrob,
or the neighbors.
Grandma’s new grave
is unmarked next to
her husband, Mikael,
whose face shows
a sad but happier time.
Friends are close by.
One grave, on the fringe,
has a picture of a husband
and a wife, a large oval:
the man gravely sick,
the wife’s best attempt
at life’s happiness
in her sad smile.
Dispossessed said their faces,
he’s been dead for five years,
the year of her demise
not yet etched.
“Together, forever,” it read,
but not yet….

Well-crafted lives
lead to larger monuments
in this marble village.
some stones,
names in the undecipherable
ancient language
only few could know.

An old, hefty-man
in a black eye-patch
stares through the
remaining porcelain,
his only eye searching
for his mother’s name,
while his younger brother
wanders among names
of old friends, names
ending in the
same refrain,
the son of ….

Or, those shortened
names: Ross or Peter,
on gravestones
like marble steps
leading to the top
of Mount Ararat.

PAUL ALOOJIAN: The Melon Pickers

This poem is about the Westside of the Valley in 100 degree heat.

The local dropouts relayed stolen
watermelons from the sidecars
of stalled field trains
to a pickup badly needing a paint job.

Above the field, beyond the mountains,
a blistering cherry shot through
a blue jellyfish of pyrotechnics.

Body aching from the days before,
another day picking melons one by one,
and one’s mind wanders,
as the dragonfly wings of the loading machine,
as young girls drink lemonade on back porches,
watching vines grow.

Between the furrows,
gravity strapping us to the ground,
we bite the flesh of cantaloupe,
blue chambray shirts and red bandanas
soaked through with juice and sweat.

Bending back and legs, lifting the balls of fruit
onto the rolling conveyor
12 hours a day for three weeks,
then back to school or Mexico,
whichever comes first.

Christopher Atamian: Three Wise Men (Murder on 187th Street)

(What a Christmas present, in December, 1933…

Oh they knifed the Bishop dead!
He was a Saint, a Godly man
A leader of our flock
The first man, a Ramgavar, said.

Oh they knifed the bishop dead!
He deserved it, the bastard betrayed Gomidas
To the Turkish Secret Police and let Smyrna burn
The second man, a Tashnag, said.

O they knifed the bishop dead!
Who will sleep with my wife now
When I am too tired in bed?
The Third man, no party affiliation, said

You had better wash that altar clean
At old Holy Cross Church in Washington Heights.
So much blood spilled, so much sin.

Alene Terzian: Not a Love Poem #9

Click here for the audio clip Not a Love Poem #9 read by Lola Koundakjian.

My lover sent me a vacuum for my birthday.
A tall, yellow machine, hypo-allergenic
complete with adjustable, two speed motor
and five-year warranty.

First I vacuumed the bed sheets, sucked in cookie
crumbs, paperclips, bobby pins, one black sock
and a nickel caught in the folds of blue
duvet cover.

Then I moved through closets, over dress
shirts on wire hangers, half-knotted ties,
khakis and button flies, band camp t-shirts,
and a misplaced Playboy.

I went to the office next, behind the computer
desk and stacks of bills, appointment cards,
Doonesbury cartoons on corkboard, my picture,
and the ringed stain on wood.

Last were the tiny scraps of paper on the nightstand,
where we’d scribble parts of dreams: unicorns
and evil eyes, crosses and frozen lakes, parting
words, and that night with no moon.

I vacuum every room, collect fibers and hair,
watch them catch in blades, twist and settle
in ballooning bag. Each evening I empty it,
reflect on the perfect, loveliness of dust.

Interview of author and editor Harry Keyishian

Alan Whitehorn: North Avenue

In a stone cutter's efficiency,
the new North Avenue slices through historic old neighbourhoods.
In place of old three-story buildings,
new ten storey high-rises dominate,
with their stunning architecture
and sky-high prices.
Already, fashionable boutiques and trendy bars
have opened
on the ground floor.
Yet, to my surprise,
scores of families seemed to mill about.
I wondered:
'What is so fascinating about this newly completed block?',
Day after day, at about the same time,
early in the evening,
without fail,
crowds of families appeared.
It is true that the traffic-free boulevard provides safe relief
from the frighteningly swift cars.
Still, it seemed a pre-occupation with an avenue
and new shops
that I could not fully comprehend.

But tonight, I finally understand.
I was told by a politics student
that silent protesters gather on this boulevard
to show their unwillingness to accept the presidential election results.

To my amazement,
I had been amidst a protest,
and did not even know it!

What kind of political science professor am I?
It seems I need to have my prescription glasses checked.
I also need to listen to the students more.

Alan Whitehorn: Studying Genocide

The more I study genocide,
the less I feel I know.
The enormous magnitude of the suffering,
the vastness of the tragic personal accounts,
the multitude of social, economic, political and cultural causes,
and the almost uncountable number of victims.
The continuation and new iterations of the terrible deeds,
all overwhelm.

And so,
I continue the long journey into the dark night
in hopes that eventually I will understand
and find the light.

He has published five collections of poetry with Carnegie Mellon University Press, The Man in the Middle, Falling Deeply into America, About Distance, Years Later, and most recently, So I Will Till the Ground¸ poems dealing with the Armenian genocide of 1915, the author's boyhood in Alexandria, and his eventual immigration to the United States with his family. His poems have appeared in numerous publications including The American Poetry Review, The American Scholar, Boulevard, The Georgia Review, Iowa Review, Poetry, Poetry Northwest, Shenandoah, TriQuarterly, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and in over 25 anthologies and textbooks. He directs the creative writing program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Lola runs the Dead Armenian Poets' Society and the Armenian Poetry Project, a blog containing text and audio clips.

Arthur Nersesian is a real New York writer. His novels are a celebration of marginal characters living in the East Village and trying to survive. Nersesian's books include The Fuck-Up, The East Village Tetralogy, Unlubricated, Chinese Takeout, Suicide Casanova, Dogrun, Manhattan Loverboy, and most recently, The Swing Voter of Staten Island. He was an editor for The Portable Lower East Side, which was an important magazine during the 1980s and early 90s. When The Fuck-Up came out in 1997, MTV Books picked it up and reprinted it in a new edition for hipsters everywhere. Soon Nersesian was no longer known only to a cabal of young bohemians on Avenue A. His work has been championed by The Village Voice and Time Out.

ABOUT GARTAL: Since December 2002, Gartal ("to read" in Armenian) has been an independent forum for both established and emerging writers of Armenian descent and/or writers dealing with Armenian themes to read their poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and dramatic texts to the public. Coordinated by writer Nancy Agabian, Gartal brings together, via the dual acts of reading and listening, diverse Armenian constituencies, from the progressive to the traditional. A particular effort is made to give voice to Armenian stories that haven't been widely heard, including those of mixed race, various religions, different economic backgrounds, and gay and lesbian Armenians. For more information about the series, email nancyagabian@gmail.com.

Alan Whitehorn: Searching For Mother Armenia

My friend Vasken told me of his unsuccessful search.
He had looked all over,
but could not find a post card of the towering statue of Mother Armenia.
I said I knew of some good gift shops and bookstores to try.

And so, I set out on my hunt.
Last year, the cards had been aplenty.
But as I searched,
I gradually realised that this year seemed to be another story.
Wherever I looked, I could not find such a card.

Disappointed, I returned to the hotel apparently defeated.
But I would try one last place.
The new gift shop in the hotel,
athough not fully stocked,
might have it.
The young lady said she had only one postcard of Mother Armenia,
but it was in a box of 60 various cards.
I certainly didn't want that many,
and so I politely declined.
As I began to go out of the shop,
the lovely lady graciously offered me the single card.
When I offered to pay,
she generously declined.
It was her gift to me.

I, in turn, passed on the special card to the receptionist,
who, subsequently, gave the precious item to Vasken.
He was delighted that he could now send the image of Mother Armenia
to his dear friend in America.

And so,
we discover the true spirit
in many small kind deeds.

(The Armenian is he who suffers from not being an ideal Armenian)
Vahe Oshagan

We try to hold in our minds
The inability to understand
What it is that we are searching for.
East and West, Old and New
Opposites stripped of meaning
Grasping for a past that constantly eludes us.
A prophet from Edessa, a giant from Moush
Nomads sprung from desert and rock,
Traveling backwards through Cilician time
Mourning for memories
We try to suppress.
And always the yearning
For something we cannot ever reach.

Kevork Kalayjian: TAX TIPS FOR ARTISTS AND WRITERS

First you have to add all your expenses.
An expense is any outlay of cash,
or anything of monetary value
which is deemed necessary
to get you that which drives you;
to repeat the noises you hear,
to convey the feelings you live,
to express the things you imagine,
to transform the pain to laughter,
to put tears in the eye of the cynic,
to put a smile on a child's face,
that which you call inspiration.

Everything you do to achieve
inspiration, is a deductible expense;
the trip you took to Utah
to see the gas station attendant
who replaced the murdered one,
your search of your roots
in Upstate New York, Rumania,
England, France or Tasmania,
your trip to the corner drug store,
your experience of 'love' on 42nd Street,
your train ride, just to witness
the walls pass you by,
all are deductible expenses,
as long as you can document them
with your diaries and receipts.

And then of course your entrance fees
at 'T. T. The Bears' or the other place
your beer, your cigarette, your ... as long as,
it's instrumental in getting you inspired.

Once you add all your expenses
it's time to figure out your income.

An income is anything of monetary value
which you obtain in the process of
dispensing inspiration.

So you add all your royalties,
a "thank you" here, a "good work" there
sale of your book, 13 cents each,
sale of your waterbed 89 dollars,
sale of your soul to your creative impulse.

Add to your income the profit you share
from throwing yourself into the ocean
don't forget to say something about
the survival of the whales,
the concentration camps,
they are still popular, and a good source
for a quick return on investment,
like justice, truth, and the happiness pursuit,
they are the in thing, and they will bear fruit.

Don't forget the income you obtain
from your part-time work at McDonalds,
your full time trial period at the museum,
the hospital, the grocery store, the office job.

When you have all these facts and your backups,
place them all in a shoebox, and go to
the I. R. S. Taxpayer Assistance line,
or you can all come to me,
I have no problems
in counting your blessings.

Christopher Atamian: Mixobarbarians

Mixobarbarians at the gate
Carrying take-out fusion
Diasporan specials, hold the curry
More kim chi please
Divided souls, fifth columnists
Guilt-ridden BMW stick shifters
One eye eastward the other West.
Long gone are the days
Of Pledge Allegiancc to the Flag-
Now Jansenists at heart
Questioning everything
Accepting nothing
Globalized skeptics.

Christopher Atamian: Hana Spills the Milk

for Gregory Djanikian

It is nineteen eighty something
And Hana Mandlikova has Chris Evert by the throat
Up five games to zero in the third as I watch nervously
(How I wish to be truly American and blond like she
Every fiber of my body aches and wants to kiss the very ground she walks on)

“Well anyone’s better than that dyke what’s her name? Pfuh” my father
spits.”
“Martina I answer and my heart sinks. Martina is a sister
Gay as a picnic basket, pink as a rubyfruit jungle.

And slowly Chrissie comes back
Apple pie, Chevrolet, one game, now two
Ice Maiden, Queen of Cool, (a thinking man’s sex pot)
Now three games and four, that’s what she does best

And as she finally takes the lead, it all comes out:
The Marxist-Chrissie-hating-American-bashing.
The shame of it almost makes me scream
(because Hana is Czech and the Czechs are behind the iron curtain
and so are Armenians so we must love her over Chrissie
even after the tanks have rolled into Prague.
And their names are hard to pronounce too
so we must feel kinship, empathize.)

At five games to six, my father can barely contain himself.
He jumps out of his seat
As if he were at a World Cup final
Knocking over his madzoon and plate of pilaf.

“Aggh my son! My son! Look, Hana is going to spill the milk!”
I nod dutifully and smile with inner glee.
Apple pie and Chevrolet is about to win the Open again
Sputnik and the commies can go to Hades.

And before leaving the house, I cannot help but correct him:
“It’s spill the beans, dad, and cry over spilled milk.”
Pause for effect, look straight into his Anatolian eyes.
“All she did was choke-plain and simple. No metaphors or fancy
turns-of-phrases required.”
And my father looks up and stares at his long-haired American son, befuddled.

Sdepan Keshishian: The Winter Dragon

I.
Instances of stand-still time:
the bus-stop or a cashier line,
at all of which the winter dra-
gon lurks.

II.
I walked into the sun this evening... and global warming
seeped back through the contours of my eye
sockets. until Spring, I will blow out the contempt
into a tissue. For all of eternity.

III.
At an undisclosed left-hand turn,
my face barrels along gusts of wind,
its shell cracking and peeling off at the finer points.
Such is life in the ventilation system.

IV.
voyeuristic third-story pixelated vistas
above electric roller discos
-captured a tail, a trail of spines
while supermarket security reported flaming toehairs.

I crept through the stainless kitchen ceiling
and hung point five stories up and around
the brick corner, off the fire escape-
just out of range from rolling breath.

Sevana Bagdasarian: In a Restaurant

Watching you in the glass I wonder
what it is like to be so alone
and why you do not eat
but starve yourself, groveling
like a monk. You let food stand on the glass
so you stare against yourself
with great hunger,
needing to show me how you wipe saliva away
(resentfully and without hesitation)
until I see your reflection in the table, correctly,
as a man starving, not
the echo I enjoy.

Sdepan Keshishian: Swan Song

This pond is a picture
perfect of sludge
and litter.

In fact...
concrete,
its base slopes
in at angled filters
preserving what has never existed.

This poem is a picture
framed in a temperate breeze
of tax dollars.

I could hover along the glass ripples,
Resting under the shade of the willow.

I could hollow out my essence,
Folding back unto the seeping edges.

I could drain along the wall,
Flowing with the bottom current.

and as the filters approach,
I could slip out my purse,
Filling it with coins.

and after extracting
the zinc and copper,
I could harvest the wishes

While the pigeons work for more.

Click here to hear the audio segment The Lake read by Lola Koundakjian.

Swallow

Swallow, swallow,
Fine bird of spring,
Tell me, where
Are you flying, so fast?

Ah swallow, fly
To Ashtarak, where I was born
Weave your nest there
Beneath your native roof.

There, far away, I have
An ageing father who mourns,
Who waits out the days
For his only son.

When you see him
Bring him all my love;
Tell him he must sit and weep
Over his luckless son.

Tell him that I'm
Bereft and miserable,
Always crying, always wretched,
My life worn down, half gone.

For me, the day
Passes in darkness,
And no sleep comforts
My eyes at night.

Tell him I am fading
Before I ever came to bloom,
A splendid small flower
Wrenched from its native ground.

Well, pretty swallow,
Be gone, fly away fast
To the land of Armenia,
To Ashtarak, where I was born.

Evangeline Dardouni: Free Verse

November 2003

I am sad today
and I didn’t cry last night
because my heart isn’t broken and I just love my job-
“would you like to open a Jcrew charge and save 10% on your purchase-“
I’m hungry lunch is in my bag that I carried on my walk from Wickenden St.
I don’t miss NY and my home life in Providence is perfect
and I’m not responsible for my feelings
Mookie is absolutely not the cutest dog I have seen
Blank Blank Blank-
I don’t know what to write
sigh sigh
I cant believe she did that- GET OVER IT- who cares-free Write-Write-Write
Daddy-
wonder how he is-he calls that much
like I love to talk to my mother I didn’t just scratch my-
that word out wow Sandra just turned the page
she hasn’t written more than me
don’t forget to lie you honest fool
maybe this will do you some good since you’re so honest
Blank-Blank-Blank
this is typical weather for November
My Birthday is not in a month and I am not getting older and no it doesn’t suck
and neither do I –she didn’t laugh and I know why
door creeks itch on my cheek
no more lies, lies, lies
blah blah blah don’t know what to write but
I have it all figured out
period. comma, coffee-
I am not addicted to coffee
Blank-
alarm on wicker table
he called last night late and we met for drinks down the street and we had the best time
and he is attractive blank Joe, Joe, blank Joe,
I went to sleep happy and
I did not punch my pillow or scream out love
because he called and I had someone else to think about
my friends are not worried about me
Blank
When the hell is that damn timer gonna go
I hope he doesn’t call tonight or
later because then I will have to get to know
someone knew and its all too scary right
now I cant lie for shit
this was easy
flip the page good lies good lies white
elastic on my wrist my hair is clean
I am fulfilled
I am not loved
I am fearless
I am not angry
At the world
I am not talented
And have not known love
I am compassionate

I do not think I am foolish
I am sick of not sick of myself
I don’t need yoga
And I don’t need to write
Lies lies lies
Teach me what is real
or nothing at all
Blank blank
I am not jealous
I am sorry I moved to Providence
15 seconds left
too many for me
let this end
