Literary Quote for January 2014

(1851-1872)

Karen Kevorkian : Morning News

Spread the pages. Who is
crying today? Mother

lost a son. Father lost
three daughters. Child lost
both arms. City lost
fifty
"from the poorest part, the market."

"These scenes are graphic and may contain content offensive to some." The bodies

drawn from their trays in the cabinets
of the morgue. A child who seems to be dressed

in red. Helplessly
weeping, a big nosed mustached man
covers his eyes with one hand. A voice says quietly

"Mohammed, Mohammed." Then the hospital

where from a boy's body wrapped in white gauze

a plastic tube trails.
You see it all.
The man raising

the boy's shirt to show us. The boy's hands
as he tries to

push the shirt down

Karen Kevorkian: Soon

The wind's harder breathing
stuttering the window frame. A limited
war. Its limited
deaths.
           Soon

a few months the leaves again
budding. All that
murderous flourishing.

17th Spring
by Zahrad

Still new neo seven
teen fledgling birdlings
cling clang hang
from the branch
of the tree not daring
leaving loving the sturdy tree
by the light
by moonlight
they fall in love
with the light
of the lit tree like
flitting jays
poppingjay
bobbing jay
by the lamp light they toss
away seeds, waste seeds
until the summer night
and summer comes
to calm
their burning skins
fire spumes from their wings
of the new seven
teen staying up
ready
hanging on the limb
waiting and wanting
the first try
the first trial

Lory Bedikian: Self-Portrait with Crane

On road trips, no coastal fog rolling in
Brings me the sea gull or sandpiper

shifting from water to sky,
but the common Armenian crane

who treks across the Atlantic,
breaks through California clouds,

haunts the laurels, the eucalyptus,
a message tucked in its beak.

In riffs strummed on midwestern guitars,
I can hear the duduk hound me

with its drone of apricot wood,
piping a monotone dirge, driven

like the tumbleweed. In New Mexico,
each flute player’s eyes turns

into the pomegranate seed.
Going east should bring foliage

but I see the blue eye in trees.
For days, New England’s sediment

drops into riverbeds, bends
into Gorky’s brush strokes.

No relief. Ghosts float west
from Ellis Island, crosses tattooed

on their forearms, worry beads
pebbled in their grip. Even as I watch

the world series, a fly ball
turns back into the crane.

Tatul Sonentz: SHOWTIME…

Come one  come all
Come one-and-all
Come and see
This death-defying act
Featured in bright cosmic lights
Across the dazzling marquee
Of this traveling circus of
Ever expanding, ever elusive
Big Bang’s Motion and Sound
Star-studded program
Introduced today by a gaggle
Of hilarious creationist clowns
This seven-day wonder miracle
Full of raucous belly laughs
Of swift burning meteors
Of instant romance
And scorching satiric strife…
Come one  come all
To the only show in town
Come and witness
This preordained accident
With no survivors…
This ultimate crash pile up
On the crowded highway
Of death-defying life
………………. Tatul Sonentz

Le ciel est par-dessus le toit,
si bleu, si calme!
P. VERLAINE

Ralph Setian: Bird-Watching

The bald eagles perched high upon the pines
we stand silently stealthily watching
peering through telescopes and binoculars
as they majestically ignore us.
We stand.
We wait.
We watch.
We hope.
We freeze.
And then --

suddenly--

       the magic moment --

James Baloian: IN THE SAN JOAQUIN

The warm tropical winds have finally
pushed a high pressure system
over the valley, and suddenly
the idleness of February and March

becomes a fury of Aries
blowing fire in each Ant
to catch up for the late cloudy weather;

Weeding, spraying, planting, tying and picking,,
irrigating, tractoring
the Ghost of the Bear
finally awakens
bumps his head
in the dark cave,
and each morning
through his transcendental cave,
feels the eye of the Sun
wake earlier,
and hears the birds
singing their songs
in the black/blue
and the Sun
coming North

the smells of Orange blossoms
in the cool evening and mornings
release her scent to the Earth
and by afternoon
lay still and yellow
curling below the shade
of the leaves
a small ball
of green, the eye hidden
in the leaf for December

and I wonder if I want to wake,
and go out into the world of working hands,
and faces that speak in the dust
and growing of roots and the fingers
of green brushing the windows
of lighthouses
looking out with a singular eye
the voice of Josha
on the lips of the Horn.

Albert Kapikian: Lamentations from the Armenian

the last light    loiters
wet in the trees

a voice     waivers
unwombing dawn

I unweed your tapestry
of stars. Some bleed when I yank
them out. I want
to throw them back up
into the sky, I want to unleash
our arms, the exquisite torture of hands

2

the year is strange I did not want to see it
sometimes I dream of coming home
even my old bootprints are here
I dream of sinking into them
never coming back

I dream of a childsong
a pulse of my own
as we watch the sky
in cups held like mounds
of earth in our hands

3

I will never wait again for their faces
They have no more stones to bring me
To burden me with. Only casual whispers
And decrepit feet. They are watching something else

The sun perhaps. Or the stones that drop from the sun
When our dreams no longer wait for us

They are lost. They do not listen to me
They will always have these stone faces now
In the dark as we labor by the sea
The sand wailing in between our toes

4

Where is the end, dark Jesus, Suicide
Rich in thunder and river blood, where are
The trees that will take root in our bowels,
The storms, where are the storms, let us gather
At the mouth of the storms and take them up
Like broken flowers, sober shapes of
Death, let us restore them now
And forever and unto the ages
Of ages. Let the leaves, that fall in-
Furiate us.

5

it is late and white
there are no prisoners or psalmists
only flies and air

the moon is a wafer of light

we snatch at last things and tuck them away
like tired children
in the dark we excavate a last prayer
and cover it with stones leave it out without a name

6

We choose Hell
- Vahan Tekeyan

The wind is leaves and stars tonight.
It is done, done. Dawn, done. The hour, done.
The bell, the flower, wind. The water, wind.
Come, you may come. Touch us. You without
a face. Without a life of your own. You, Death.
Break now. Heart. Go triumph in the black wound
Of trees by the sea. There we will spawn such dark
That night itself could not speak our name.
This night, anyway, is here. Let us mourn
And be fruitful, and in the deep furnaces of the earth.

Let us multiply

Esther Mazakian: Inside Her Darkest Ice Age

From under an avalanche of angst-y avoidance they sniffed out
an escape route like it was fresh kill; predators gathering in cool cahoots, they moulded
a smooth globular cake of icy guile
out of instinct, hard
snow, to serve as the first loveball of hot grade 8 infamy; a recess erection
for a week straight and architecturally,
a frozen
                                                sherbet of near-
fornication
that caught her breathless one frigid morning ass-
first after Science, protesting disingenuous, gasping with hormonal semi-indecision,
her neck a scarf of sweaty mohair, her body a toppled
baby in a snowsuit, nylon arms, legs, hood pointed
into a star shooting toward the blue,
                                wintry,
cartoon-cloudy sky,
and her lips pressed to the lips of the maladjusted boy thrown at her
core, core of seedy pubescent entrails, boy from the back
of the class with the scuzzy
hair, plaque-hoary teeth, no wherewithal
to hand
anything in, and she kissed him hard, hard with a zealous, crural squeeze that surprised
even her, this boy, this boy that her mother
would have taken by the ear like a rat
by its tail
                                and fast chaperoned
out of her daughter’s world, a world that was, until then, a still-frozen sluice of coming
betrayal, that is,
                                                                                                before the cryo-
                                                philic
father’s head caught wind,
hacked up a squall of encroachment,
                                                                                                                                                 blew.

Esther Mazakian lives in Toronto. In 2006, she published her first book of poetry, All The Lifters (Signature Editions), which was shortlisted for a ReLit Award. She is currently working on a second entitled, The Stain of the Story.

Albert Kapikian: Snow

Forget about us, about our
generation. We have envied plants
and stones, we envied dogs

Myra Sklarew
The Science of Goodbyes

The wind is steep and near. Come snow.
The children wait for you. They say
The earth will drop and fill in white.
They wait for you tonight, for you.

The dimensions of the sky loosen and start to slip out,
No longer pasted together with light.
The bottomless side has already fallen

The snow lowers in slants.
Like a crate it leans
And claps onto the earth
