William Michaelian: William Saroyan Says Hello Yerevan

Forty years ago, when we went roaring down
that San Francisco hill in our cousin's little Volvo,
Willie and Archie had Death laughing so hard
tears were running down his face.

But when they pushed him out at a turn,
oh, how Death's expression changed.

When Saroyan went to Hayastan,
he said, "Ah . . . hello, Yerevan,"
and the wise old city smiled.

Now, half his ashes are there.

When Archie Minasian put out his last cigar,
he softly said, "Look at your tiger now."

Since then, Death has looked for ways to kill himself.

Click to hear the audio clip Worn Out Dreams read by Lola Koundakjian.

Ա.

Tina Demirdjian: Compact

She left her compact
blue and gold
lying upside down
in her drawer
hidden
in its white powder
something she always
wanted to tell me.
But her eyes,
now empty cups of milk
no longer remembered.

Inside was the mirror
full of powder
forty years old
opening for me
like a woman
telling secrets
of her flesh.

In silence
pink white flakes
covered my hands.
I bent down kneeling
to look further
inside her drawer.

Each time I opened
the compact
a sound, click,
of a half cricket
the sound of lips
pressing together.
There were whispers
contained
In small breaths.
I clicked a kiss
in the mirror
of white powder
and became
a white curtain.

I was sheer,
a translucent flag
and saluted her
with all my flesh
and then
with the click
of my lips
closed
her white body.
Snap!
like the clap of hands
like magic
life vanishes
"dust to dust"
opening and closing
happening
almost all at once.

Ara Babaian: The Other Face

Today I am thinking of
The tender arms of history.
Not the bloody pogroms or the conquerors.
Today I am thinking of
A village woman
Baking bread,
Bread so soft that I
Want to rest my head
Against its flesh
And let its heat
Warm me.

Alec Ekmekji: [Cool, the moon...]

Cool,
the moon I know knowingly glows
beneath my bare soles
as I gently step
step gently,
try to step gently
among craters.

But ancient pebbles
perforate the skin
and create craters
anew
that creep into the souls
of me and the moon and I wonder: why be a
fool?

Alan Hovhaness: Lament to Ani

Click to hear the audio clip Lament to Ani read by Lola Koundakjian.

I had trusted
In your thousand churches,
In the might of your Christian God,
But now only broken stones
And ruined walls remain,
Perhaps he has vanished
To a distant planet
Of a distant sun
In a distant universe,

But why has he left you
To the cruel jealous
God of the enemy?
Why slay, tearing bone from bone,
Stone from stone?
Cruel and jealous is the
God of strangers,
Terrible the loneliness
Amid ruins.

Khatchig Mouradian: Letter to Hrant Dink

Dear Hrant,

I believe by now, the water found its crack; you found in the
great beyond those whom we lost 92 years ago.
Hrant, I have some favors to ask.
Embrace Krikor Zohrab for me. Tell him I have been reading
and rereading his short stories ever since I discovered them.
Give Daniel Varoujan my best. Tell him he enlightened my
youth with his poems, and he continues to inspire my soul.
Hrant, do not forget to chant songs of survival with Siamanto.
Tell them they are on our bookshelves, they are on our classroom tables, their words are on our
lips and in our hearts. And tell them I believe-I'm sure you do too-that one day, they will be on the bookshelves,
classroom tables, lips and hearts of Turks as well.
One day their statues-and yours-will also adorn Istanbul.
Do not forget to pray with Komitas, and tell him that one day, Armenian women will sing again
in the villages of Anatolia.
Please find my grandparents. Tell them we carry their names and their love to the land they never
left, the land we never saw.
Hrant, kiss the blessed foreheads of each and every victim of the Medz Yeghern of 1915.
Tell them we shall continue to walk on the road of their dreams. Because their dreams are our
dreams.
Tell them we shall make the deserts flourish with the scent of their memory.
Tell them that from Talaat to Samast, we are survivors.
Tell them we are all Zohrab, Varoujan, Siamanto, Komitas and Hrant.
Love,
Khatchig Mouradian

This letter appeared in the Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007 issue of the Armenian Weekly. It is reproduced here with the permission of Khatchig Mouradian, on the occasion of the first anniversary of Hrant Dink's passing.

Hope is immemorial

Sevana Bagdasarian: The Morning Walk

for Nazim Hikmet

.... This Armenian citizen has not forgiven
the slaughter of his father in the Kurdish mountains.
But he loves you,
because you also won't forgive
those who blackened the name of the Turkish people.
- Nazim Hikmet, "The Evening Walk", 1950

It's 1997 April 24th.
I'm going to crack my back today
sing a dirge for you
dear spine, dear numbness, a story
carved by pomegranate seeds on obsidian.

You are a buttermilk churner, your name,
your eyes, the windows of an apple. Today is the day
I find the journal of an Armenian girl,
hold the two of you close together,
as the moon smiles behind us.

Have you ever seen the moon smile?
Have you ever seen anyone run like spilt milk?

You are not here, my only friend,
my only Turk with the mouth of an Armenian.
My questions are unanswered.
Questions asked a million and a half times,
by turtles who snapped beneath their shells
when you tried to lure tongues out of hiding.
I know you loved the sky
cloudy and clear, could not see it
for thirty-five years, as I do now, in Glendale,
a city full of Armenian grocers, children
who openly say "parev" with the breath
of ripe apricots, with Platonic love,
as ants crawl over that which is not theirs.
Shall we shake hands? Make amends?
It is spring. The rhododendrons
on Mrs. Keropian's front porch
are in red, blue and orange buckets
white hairs sprout from the Black Sea of her scalp.

Mrs. Keropian names items
after 120 year old sisters who chatter now
in dormant boats on the sea floor.
She names coffee cups
with black marshes of fortunes at the bottom
Sipan, Daron, and Van,
though there isn't a Sipan, Daron, or Van.

"They came to me in my dreams,
came to me with baskets of green
almonds with lashes. They stared, bloodshot
pupils dilated, and asked me to clean out their eyes!"

Should I listen to her? Should I tell them to be well?

I think I will hang my laundry out to dry.

These are the questions you should have asked. But today,
you are silent, and she is deaf. The secretive
moon takes your place, and converses
with her cups of teeth. Her window is barred,
her grave, nameless.

Remember the crescent moon, the star,
rivers and lakes you loved, Arax and Van.
I will answer your questions,
someone who hasn't worked the earth
indeed, can't love it.

A pencil point can't be a collage.

Now that I have answered our questions,
I'll clutch your pages in my Armenian hands,
nod a brief nod, swallow loathing and love,
and wish you well under your Anatolian sun,
so yellow, bleeding.

Sylva Dakessian: Listen

Flowers in my ears
blooming, blooming so I can't hear
a damn thing. I pluck
them out as fast as I can
but they come so fast and soft
I decide to be a vase.

A competition fınalist is included in this collection of dramatized highlights of Armenian history and art along with many published poems. Recently work from her previous books was anthologized as part of a Heyday Books collection called Forgotten Bread, the image taken from one of her poems.

Helene Pilibosian has delved into the ancient and recent Armenian past to fılter out these poems like luminous shared songs from the mire of history. The Nazeli poems are especially exciting and appropriate narratives in blending thought of Armenia with thought of America. —David Kherdian

This is a strong manuscript. —The University of Wisconsin Press

I am struck by these poems both for their artistry and for the wisdom of what they have to say. The stories they contain are resonant with mystery and ancestral voices. They move me as only poetry can: for their beauty, their humanity, their humility and their many illuminations. —Harold Bond

(1851-1908)

ALONE

Years behind me
torment me
with bitter memories
of happiness.
Years ahead petrify me
with horrible premonitions
of madness.
Past years took everything
with them, everything.
Years ahead shall bring
nothing for me –
They shall bring new doubts
to my mind,
new letdowns to my heart,
and new mists
to my soul.
They arrive as swift bearers
of ill tidings
and depart ever so slowly,
for they always depart
with a heavy load,
those new years – now old.
Beddings are folded
one by one, one by one
dishes removed and voices
silenced one by one.
Only one cot now in my house
and a single dish
on my table and not even one
single echo of a voice.
I eat my food and my food
devours me.
I roam around my rooms –
ghosts roam around the corners
of my cranium
and on the walls white as shrouds
roam, clinging to each other,
the specters of my
loved ones.
The cruel old good years
reveal to my eyes
radiant scenes of bliss,
while the years ahead
parade pitch-black shivers
in my soul…
————— Yeghia Demirjibashian (1892)

Seul (Extrait)

Tina Demirdjian: Two Dying Bees

I peered at them one by one
their wings
disintegrating
into the afternoon light:
their huge black eyes
staring back at me,
motionless,
and without a sound:
wispy skeletons
that had grown silent
on the leaves
of my red-flowered cactus
and my purple geranium.
How silent we can become.

Tina Demirdjian: IN THE KITCHEN

It was always a fiasco
to put away the dishes
to stack the amber glasses
one on top of the other
toss the miss-matched
silverware in the drawer
stolen from the airlines
or the Fountainbleau Hotel
during my parent’s honeymoon.

We always like to steal
a little memory
dad said with a smile
and so we had a collection
of stolen things
in my childhood
the memory of them
coming back to me
at the oddest moments
sticking to me like the humid nights
in New Jersey

the way you stuck to me
that day in the kitchen
the third time we kissed
when your hands
went beneath
my peach sweater
to touch my breasts
I think I’m falling
in love with you, you said
and I kept silent in the kitchen

thinking I heard
the jerking of those amber glasses
being stacked on top of one another
and the clanging of silverware
tossed inside the drawer

like I tossed my peach sweater
in the closet
after we kissed:
you stole a little of me
that afternoon
and inside my sweater
I stole a bit of your smell.
