Harout Kostandyan, Wisdom of the Days, Paris, 1935

In the dark and narrow staircases as I climb 8 flights
And make my way through the narrow passages of the building
I think to myself as I enter my room
- This is my home, my homeland, all that I've got.

A worn out rug brought from the East,
Its colours washed out, thin, naked as an orphan
It speaks in its low voice
- This is my home, my homeland, all that I've got.

On the wall hangs its beautiful picture
Sometimes reflecting a memory tender and noble,
It loved but has long forgotten,
- This is my home, my homeland, all that I've got.

In the bookcase, the silent books
have taught me wisdom and stories in vain
Because I know their advice by heart
- This is my home, my homeland, all that I've got.

And the map of Armenia, from sea to sea
Burns injured by the heart's poison and love
While in my mind the map is torn in a thousand pieces
I search a homeland where men do not hate each other.
